Mercer County Shopper

UX architecture + Web Design
Local Business Directory Platform
Role: Web Designer / UX Architect
Tools: HTML, CSS, PHP, Foundation Framework

Strategy Brief

Overview

Mercer County Shopper is a website that displays local dinners, entertainment, and local business information, similar to Yelp or Yellow Pages. With the only exception being that instead of being a website for businesses all over the world it would only be for a specific area (Mercer County, Ohio).

Problem

Local businesses in Mercer County lacked a centralized digital platform to promote services, events, and deals to local residents.

Target Audience

The targeted audience for this website would host an age range from 16 years of age to 75 years of age male or female. As for demographics of location, Mercer County, Ohio would be the target audience along with people visiting the area who are looking for places to be entertained or places to eat. Median of incomes would range from $15,000 a year and up to $125,000 per year. The user would not need to posses a high knowledge of technology but more rather simple skills such as navigating a webpage or using a mobile app on a smartphone.

Strategy

As mobile apps and responsive web design become more of a plausible solution for business owners they often need a place to host their menus or events that they are hosting at their business. Along with the products and services they offer, these businesses need a way to let the locals know when something is going on. Websites such as Yellow Pages and Yelp often do not include menus, or events so the need for this is almost a must. The Mercer County Shopper will allow these businesses to host their menus, along with events, and even products that are sold to be displayed to the public by using geolocation and finding the best match in the Mercer County area. The website is targeted to a specific area so there is no confusion or misguided information as each business will have their own custom page and allow them to customize the options that they need most.

Objective

  • Create and launch a website with a budget of $50,000 with a total timeline of six (6) months from the clients approved start date.
  • Allow user membership to remain cost free for the life time of the website
  • Ensure all areas of the website are secure and allow no room for user information to be penetrated and allow user privacy to remain private until they decide they want to display publicly their information.

Execution

The idea of the website is to gather all local businesses and put them into one directory that allows all the local businesses to be displayed and compared at the users preference. Often other services that target small businesses display information worldwide or only in local publications as opposed the Mercer County Shopper where all of the local businesses are displayed fairly, and allow the user to make their on decision based off how the business displays themselves on the website. So an eatery who has their whole menu might do better than a business that only has their top 5 items on their page. It is all about detail and displaying the best qualities that your business has to offer that will make or break your page on the Mercer County Shopper. Targeting the locals is a great way to promote small businesses since these are the people who are working and spending money in the area.

Tactics

The website will require that everyone involved knows the structure of the page layout, along with the goals of which we are trying to accomplish with The Mercer County Shopper website. Additionally it would help if the team creating the page were local as well since this is a audience specific project. A web developer and graphic designer would be part of the team along with a project manager that oversees the goals and milestones of the project along with interacting with the local businesses to get the correct information on the website.

Also a network engineer and developer/programmer analyst will also work on the project as well to ensure all loads of traffic can be managed without outages and that applications within the website will work effectively before launch. Caching of the website will also be integrated into the website to ensure that less page load is brought upon the servers and cached versions of the media will be quicker to access after the first view on a users device.

All concepting, design, programming and security will be handled by Green Tee Design, along with access to administer the websites content. All marketing of the device will be done solely from the standpoint of word of mouth and by creating innovative photo campaigns on the website displaying all the features of the My Big Photo website.

Risks (High To Low)

10. One platform is more advanced and creates a separation in users with mobile and desktop versions of the website available it will be easier to display the same information on a variety of devices and settings. The problem is that if one platform overpowers another you may begin to see an increase in use for one particular platform leaving the others to be less used and ghosted out. By creating a responsive design for both platforms we will help in creating similar layouts and making sure both platforms resemble each other.

7. Analytics reports do not meet the needs of customers and advertising is terminated because of poor service as the website is only locally based the search hits are not going to be as great so it is key that geolocation works properly and that the website is generating more new users daily as the success of the whole website is contacting the local people. If unfair traffic or no traffic at all is the outcome of a paid advertising campaign the client may be inclined to cancel their service due to poor performance.

6. Search queries are not properly structured and results are left out if all databases are not properly configured into the search system a simple search may leave out the users result and not fulfill their desired need on our website. This can create user frustration and bring negative feedback if we are unable to help find the correct content that is needed. It is also important that we offer more selections than just what they have asked for so that they can possibly compare menus and find new places to eat, after all it is about promoting the local businesses.

3. Servers can't handle all of the content for all businesses and outages occur. When the website starts to see regular traffic it is important to make sure that the server hosting the website is going to be able to handle the bandwidth request. It is going to be important that the website is made for performance but still looks good so minimizing and caching of file will be used to help increase the page load times for repeat visitors. With simple text and images making up a majority of the websites content the probability is very

2. Not all features suit all of the businesses as each business suits different services it will be essential to make sure that you cover the needs of each business. By offering the option to display menu items and services and products sold that each business offers we will hopefully be able to cover all of the areas needed. If we find a strong user input for certain features we can spend more time and
resources fixing something that should have been done correctly in the first place.

9. Only a select variety of businesses use the website leaving holes in local content coverage it would be a slim chance but if there were only a few types of businesses there would not be as great of an experience as users would not be able to find the correct content they are searching for. With such a diverse range of businesses in Mercer County we would like to see a selection of options and displaying just what the user is looking for

4. The website has too much content and is overwhelming to users with such a wide variety of businesses in one area users will have to feel comfortable navigating around the website otherwise it can become frustrating and overwhelm their interest to where they might bounce from the website. Having a responsive design that houses the same feel for multiple platforms will be one solution that can help with this issue as it helps organize and present the content more effectively.

1. User registration is lower than expected having a large number of businesses is a key factor in the running of the site as it is their content that brings the user to the Mercer County Shopper website. It is also key that end users who use the website is just as great so that more people begin to use the website introducing new registrants to find places of interest.

5. Only free pages are created and additional funding from advertising is not meeting the needs of the website cost The free pages for businesses is to help offer a fair playing field for each businesses but just like anything that is free there has to be a way to make income from offering your free service. If businesses do not purchase advertising and only use the free services the content of the site will not be as entertaining but can also be a negative impact on the operating cost for the website. Advertising is just another way to help the local businesses get more outreach along with attracting new users.

Creative Brief

Message

The overall message of the website is to help users find places of interest, we want the website to feel welcoming, yet simple to keep them coming back. The user should have a better experience if the website is tailored to their needs and works properly on all platforms. We want to take the hassle out of having fun!

User Experience

While navigating through the Mercer County Shopper website and mobile page we want the user to have a smooth experience in finding their destination. It is key that the task of finding a place of interest is easy and quick to ensure that users will continue using the service to find businesses. With the interest of local businesses only the website will become locally dependent on its success. Allowing the user to view menus and other information related to the businesses is also going to make up a majority of the user experience as we would like to provide the most unto date and reliable information that is possible.

Design Constraints, Limitations, Guidelines

Two versions of the Mercer County Shopper logo are available, one containing a black "M" and one containing a white "M", no color changes are to be made to the logo. Programming of website will use Foundation 5 for CSS markup and will be used to style all modules within the website. The responsive design is held within Foundation 5 and will help cut cost in programming of the website allowing more time for each developer to work on more critical parts of the website. We have set up a big enough project contingency that will allow us to go over on time and resources for at least an extra 3 months if needed.

Standard

Adam and Karen will classify all bugs in the category of technical or design related, there could also be server bugs that would be classified into a more critical area. Lowest risk bugs would be rated a 1 with a Medium level bug being a two and a Critical Bug being a 3.

Situation

The user would be told to pick a category from the directory list, once redirected
they would begin to see options that could refine their search choosing options
until they found a choice.

The inputs and outputs would be related to the buttons or drop downs the user has selected and allow them to limit the search results. If a user wants a venue that serves alcohol they would tick the option and only results that sell alcohol would show up. Same thing for if the business takes credit card or cash, only the results the user has picked will show up.

Outcome

The Mercer County Shopper concept demonstrates a scalable platform capable of supporting:

• Local business listings
• Community event promotion
• Featured advertising placements
• Structured business discovery

The system architecture was designed to scale with future features such as user accounts, promotions, and business analytics.
